I bought this TP-Link TL-SG108E yesterday to take over as the core switch in my home network. So this is absolutely a first-impression review, not one of those “I opened the box five minutes ago and it changed my life” reviews.
What I wanted was pretty simple: eight gigabit ports, enough visibility to see what the wired side of the house was actually doing, and some management without turning my basement into a Cisco certification exam.
So far, so good
The TL-SG108E went into the core spot and the old managed switch moved upstairs. I was able to map the connections and see which links were negotiating at gigabit and which devices were only coming up at 100M. That is exactly the kind of information I wanted when I am trying to figure out whether a problem is the network, the cable, or just the device on the other end.
It is doing the job I bought it for, and it gives me more visibility than a basic unmanaged switch without making the setup unnecessarily complicated.
The important caveat
I have owned it for about a day. I cannot tell you anything meaningful about long-term durability yet. What I can say is that it is installed, it is working as my core switch, and the first day has been exactly what I wanted.
I will update this one if living with it changes my mind. For now, I would buy it again.
